A Message of Condolence

We are sad to inform you that Dr. Mark Stanley-Price passed away on December 13, 2022, at his home in Oxford, England.

Working for more than 30 years in Africa and the Middle East, Mark was an incredibly passionate and dedicated conservationist. Throughout his life, Mark always preferred ungulates to predators, but he accepted the position of Chair of the Board of Friends of Kenya Wildlife Trust-UK, a Kenyan conservation NGO known for its focus on carnivores. His seven-year commitment to this position may be seen as a testament to his love for all living creatures, regardless of whether they are herbivores or carnivores.

In his later years, Mark’s trademark intellectual curiosity led him to explore the issue of biodiversity loss and what could be done to address it. In the past, conservation efforts had largely focused on anti-poaching and law enforcement, but now they also include efforts to improve the livelihoods of local communities and the use of biodiversity credits.

Mark was constantly in touch with the Kenya Wildlife Trust (KWT) team in Kenya, sharing his ideas and challenging us to be innovative in our thinking. He was always ahead of the curve when it came to conservation, and his motivational enthusiasm and energy will be extremely hard, if not impossible, to replace in KWT.

We will miss you, Mark.

“Mark was not only a dear friend of mine but also an outstanding conservationist. His kids were the same age as mine, and his wife and mine were close friends. We enjoyed playing tennis and going on safari together, and Mark had an incredible sense of humor. Without that, how else could someone choose the dolorous, long-faced “kongoni” or Coke’s hartebeest for their Ph.D. study?” – Allan E.  Earnshaw (Chairman, Kenya Wildlife Trust).
